Top-ranked Granger holds off Indians

It takes copious talent to contend for a State 1A wrestling championship three years running. Sometimes it also takes a little good fortune.
Colville High came up just short once again in their quest for a Mat Classic XXIX 1A state championship Saturday evening in the Tacoma Dome when top-ranked Granger held off the Indians, 190-185.5.
Juan Zamora (195) and Noe Orozco (220) picked up late titles and the Spartans were able to close the door on hard-charging Colville, who made up a 35-point deficit after Friday’s first day and briefly held the lead toward the end of Saturday’s semifinals.
Granger, who crowned four champions and had 12 medalists, won its second wrestling championship. The Spartans won their first Mat Classic title in 2013.

Two champions

For Colville, it was another great run that came up just short. It’s of little consolation to the Indians that their 185.5 point total would have been good enough to win at Mat Classic in each of the last five years.
Deer Park scored 155 points last year to beat Colville (151.5).
CHS got four to the semifinals on Saturday and six in consolation (10 medalists out of the 11 wrestlers the Indians advanced out of the Omak regional to State).
Colville crowned a pair of state champions in senior TJ Baun (132) and sophomore Trent Baun (120). Their freshman brother, Tyler, was seventh at 138 pounds.
TJ, who had pinned his way to the title match at 132, won a gritty 7-5 decision over Juan Isiordia of Granger for his third title in four seasons. Trent downed Jaron Gunter of Kiona-Benton 7-3 to annex his second championship in as many state starts.
Colville senior Thailer Morrison was second at 160. He gained the finals by pinning Robert Vasquez of Granger. Morrison lost an 8-3 decision to Austin Cain of Montesano on Saturday evening in the championship match.
His brother, Trevor, finished third at 126. The sophomore pinned Boris Langdon of Castle Rock (2:31) to annex third place. Morrison lost a second round decision (6-0) to Luke Larson of Vashon before battling through the consolation bracket.

Knight comes back

Freshman Reuben Seemann was fourth at 132, giving the Indians two wrestlers on the podium at that weight. Seemann lost an 11-0 major decision to Juan Isiordia of Granger in the semifinals and was pinned in 4:38 by Rodrigo Ozuna of Warden in the match for third/fourth Saturday evening.
At 152, John Knight finished his second Mat Classic with a third place finish. The sophomore posted a 13-4 major decision over Navarro Nanpuya of Omak in the match-up for third and fourth place.
Knight lost to Granger’s Tony Almaguer in the second round on Friday and battled back to finish third. Knight finished fourth at Mat Classic as a freshman.
At 170 pounds, CHS junior Takota Ashley finished fourth. He lost to Anthony Hall of Sultan in the third/fourth match by pin (3:47).
Junior Scout Walker capped an outstanding season with a sixth place finish at 182 pounds. Walker was pinned by Hunter Gangle of Naches Valley in the fifth/sixth match (1:53).
At 285, CHS senior Sawyer Hughes finished fourth after being pinned by Anthony Llernas of Kiona-Benton.
At 113 pounds, Colville sophomore Ky Ray, making his first trip to Mat Classic, opened with a 15-0 technical fall loss to Manny Cisneros-Vargas of Highland (Cowiche) before winning via fall to stay alive. Ray was eliminated 9-2 by Gerardo Morales of Connell.
CHS head coach Randy Cloke was unavailable on Monday for comment.
