Cardboard Boat Race to be held July 16

Staff Writer

On July 16, 2017, teams of three will gather at Black Beach Resort at 2 p.m. to construct a cardboard boat in the style of their choosing. The teams will be given duct tape, sheets of corrugated cardboard, a wooden straight edge (which can double as a paddle), markers, pencils and a utility knife just before the construction portion of the contest begins.

Cardboard boat races have become popular in the past few years. They’re a great way to get kids - and adults - interested in basic construction and engineering. Many people may have seen the MythBusters episode featuring elaborate versions of the cardboard structures to prove that it most certainly can be done.

While three people construct the boat, teams may choose to race with one to three people in the boat. Additional construction materials will be given to those teams with more than 1 person in the boat during the race.

After the 90 minute construction phase, the race will begin. The boats will float roughly 30 feet out into Curlew Lake and then back to the dock. Race participants must be wearing their own approved flotation devices. Participants under 18 must have a parent or guardian present.

Registration forms and fees are due by July 10. To sign up for this family-friendly event, pick up a registration form at Harding's Hardware in Republic or at Black Beach Resort. You can also register at curlewlakerace.com. More information about the race - and updates - can be found on the race’s Facebook page: facebook.com/curlewlakerace/. All proceeds benefit the Curlew Lake Fireworks Fund.
